Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium Bicarbonate pharmaceutical & food gradeSodium Bicarbonate 99% (NaHCO3) is a white crystalline powder commonly known to as baking soda. Sodium Bicarbonate is classified as an acid salt, formed by combining an acid (carbonic) and abase (sodium hydroxide), and it reacts with other chemicals as a mild alkali. At temperatures above 300°F (149°C), sodium bicarbonate decomposes into sodium carbonate (a more stable substance), water, and carbon dioxide. Sodium bicarbonate can be divided into third categories according to its use: Sodium Bicarbonate Pharmaceutical Grade, Sodium Bicarbonate Food Grade and so on.

Application:

Pharmaceutical Grade Application: Bicarbonate of soda is used in an aqueous solution as an antacid taken orally to treat acid indigestion and heartburn . It may also be used in an oral form to treat chronic forms of metabolic acidosis such as chronic renal failure and renal tubular acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate may also be useful in urinary alkalinization for the treatment of aspirin overdose and uric acid renal stones. It is used as the medicinal ingredient in gripe water for infants and so on.

Food Grade Application: Sodium bicarbonate , referred to as "baking soda" is primarily used in cooking (baking), as a leavening agent. It reacts with acidic components in batters, releasing carbon dioxide, which causes expansion of the batter and forms the characteristic texture and grain in pancakes, cakes, quick breads, and other baked and fried foods.

Safety Information:

Sodium bicarbonate is a relatively safe chemical with its NFPA rating of 1. It is non-combustible or flammable and is useful in extinguishing fires. If ingested, drink plenty of water to dilute its strength and flush it through the digestive tract. Rinse eyes if contact is made.
